Salabega holds a distinguished place among Odisha’s devotional poets, dedicating his life to Lord Jagannath. Born in the early 17th century, around AD 1607-1608, according to the detailed account by Nilamani Mishra, Salabega was the son of Mughal subedar Lalbeg. His father’s encounter with a young Brahmin widow, Lalita, during a military campaign led to their marriage, and Salabega was their only child.
As he grew, Salabega actively participated in his father’s military campaigns and even suffered severe wounds in one battle. It was during this critical moment that he turned to the holy name of Vishnu, a practice advised by his mother, which miraculously healed him.
